So first, we’ll take a look at what we’re looking for in an Octane Booster.  Then we’ll go through our recommendations for the Top 6 Best Octane Boosters on the market today in a super simple table format for quick comparisons.  Next, we’ll dive a little deeper and give a brief review of each product and how it made its way on to our list of best octane boosters.

If you’re looking for more information as to what an octane booster actually is and what it does, keep reading.  We’ve got all of that and more in our frequently asked questions section down below.

What to Look For in a High Quality Octane Booster

There are a few things that we’re looking for when we do our Octane Booster Comparison:

Performance (Effectiveness)

Performance of an Octane Booster can be determined by monitoring the engine knock.  Engine Knock refers to the premature detonation of fuel in the combustion chamber of the engine due to pressure.  Higher octane fuels have higher resistance to premature detonation and can withstand increased pressures for higher performance.

The Engine Control Module (Engine Computer) is constantly monitoring the knock of the engine via the knock sensor and will display a “Check Engine Light” with a P0325 Knock Sensor Malfunction code if abnormalities are detected.  With special equipment, such as an OBD2 Scanner, you can get real-time read-outs of the knock sensor to determine the level of knock that the engine is experiencing at a given time.

Simply taking a measurement of the knock before and after the Octane Booster is added to the fuel should give a good approximation of performance/effectiveness.

Cost

Cost is simply the total price of the treatment per gallon of fuel.  Some are more concentrated and thus will treat more gallons of fuel per bottle so we want to take that into account.

Average User Rating

We also want to take into account as much real-world user feedback as possible by averaging out all of the user ratings that we can find to generate our own MaintainYourRide rating.

6. STP Octane Booster

The STP Octane Booster is one of the more commonly sold Fuel Treatment products in Brick and Mortar type stores.  This product isn’t quite as intense as the others on the list and is more comparable to the Lucas Octane Booster.  Typically, you can expect these type of products to provide only a marginal increase in octane.  Generally, a plastic bottle is an indicator that the products isn’t quite as strong if you need to really increase the octane rating of your fuel.

This product is by far the cheapest on our list and likely one of the more commonly used just because it’s so popular in stores.  However, we can’t vouch for it’s effectiveness from a pure octane booster perspective.  This is mainly targeted at users interested in giving a small boost to a tank of gas by cleaning the power-robbing combustion chamber deposits.

This is the type of product that gives Octane Boosters a bad name and makes people ask questions like “Does Octane Booster Work?” when trying to find the best fuel octane booster.  Some folks call them snake oil but they do provide some benefit when looking for the best fuel treatment options.  We wouldn’t put this on an octane top 15, the only reason we included it here was to warn you that you should pass on this if you’re looking for an octane booster.

Buy STP Octane Booster

5. BOOSTane Professional Octane Booster

BOOSTane is a relative newcomer to the industry, but they bring a lot of performance.    BOOSTane Professional Octane Booster has the ability to increase your fuel’s effective octane to as high as 116 octane.   It is also specially formulated to protect against the negative side effects of ethanol, restore lubricity, prevent corrosion and deposits, and prolong engine life.

BOOSTane comes with a fairly simple formula for calculating the number of quarts needed to achieve a certain desired octane and even include a handy calculator app available on Android and iOS.  A single 32oz can is capable of providing a 120 octane point boost to a 10 gallon tank (93 octane to 105 octane).

This product would definitely be higher up if it had the same level of consumer feedback as the other products on the list.  Unfortunately, being a new product, we just aren’t sure if it lives up to its aggressive marketing.  It does have an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars across the limited number of reviews.  Keep an eye on this one, as it may move up the list in the near future!

Buy BOOSTane Professional Octane Booster

4. Lucas Oil Octane Booster

Lucas Oil Octane Booster is formulated to not only increase the octane of your automotive fuel, it will also raise the temperature of engine combustion making for a more complete and efficient fuel burn within the cylinders. It is safe for use in fuel injected and carbureted 4-stroke engines.

This Octane Booster doesn’t provide as much of an octane increase as some of the others on the list with only a 2-8 octane point boost, however, its special formulation of conditioners provides an similar result without actually increasing the octane as much. It comes in a 15oz bottle that is rated to treat up to 25 gallons.

This product comes in with a very respectable average of 4.7 out of 5 stars across the hundreds of reviews we examined. If you’re looking for a good performance boost but have access to decent octane gas (93+), this product is a great way to improve the efficiency of the burn.

Buy Lucas Oil Octane Booster

3. Race-Gas Race Fuel Concentrate

Race-Gas is a patented product laboratory and race-proven alternative to racing fuel when mixed with pump gas.  It raises the octane level, chemical energy and chemical oxygen of standard pump gas up to 105 octane.  It is safe for 02 sensors, catalytic converters, and fuel system components.  It is also rated as a safe option for 2 stroke engines which is rare – things like dirt bikes, snow mobiles, lawn mowers, etc.

2 ounces will raise the octane of pump gas by 40 points (4 octane) per gallon up to 105 octane.  This makes it super easy to use – no intense calculations to determine how much to use, just add 2 ounces per gallon.  With each 32oz bottle, you can expect approximately 60 octane points boost for a 10 gallon tank (93 octane to 99 octane).

This is our recommendation for best octane booster for dirt bikes, ATV’s, Snow Mobiles, and all other 2-stroke engines.  It’s a bit more expensive than the others on our list, however, with the flexibility to add to a 2-stroke engine, the effectiveness, and the 4.4 out of 5 star user rating, we think the price is justified.

Buy Race-Gas Race Fuel Concentrate

2. Torco Fuel Accelerator

Torco is an advanced lubricants and race fuel company that has been in business since the 1940’s and is well known in the industry as one of the leaders in advanced lubricants for racing. Their Accelerator product is an unleaded race fuel concentrate that won’t harm sensitive 02 sensors or clog catalytic converters.

It is rated to increase your octane by anywhere from 20-140 points (2-14 octane) depending on the concentration. A single 32oz bottle is capable of providing a 110 point octane increase to a 10 gallon tank of gas (93 octane to 104 octane).

In our Torco Fuel Accelerator review of customer feedback, we found a respectable average of 4.4 out of 5 stars backed by a few  hundred reviews from consumers and industry experts alike.  This product is a bit more on the expensive side, but it’s clearly the winner of best octane booster from a performance perspective with a maximum possible gain of up to 14 octane (140 points).

How to Use Octane Booster

Using Octane Booster is very simple.  The first step is to determine the quantity of fuel that you’re looking to treat.  Most of our recommendations are based upon a 10 gallon tank.  This can be extrapolated out to fit a standard size gas tank of any size.

Next, you need to determine how much of an Octane Boost you are looking for.  A little math can help you determine the appropriate ratio of fuel to octane booster.  Once you’ve figured out the ratio, simply add the octane booster directly into the gas tank after your next fill up.  Simple as that.

Fuel Octane and Octane Rating

All fuels come with a rating referred to as Octane.  The rating is the measurement of the fuel’s ability to resist ‘knock’ or ‘pinging’.  Knocking/pinging happens when the combustion of the air fuel mixture in the cylinder no longer occurs at the optimal time.  This can cause damage to the engine components due to the abnormally high pressures that can occur from detonation during the piston ascent during the compression stroke.

Higher octane ratings indicate that the fuel has a higher resistance to detonation which means that the air fuel mixture is significantly less likely to detonate abnormally.  Modern cars’ computer systems are constantly monitoring for knock within the engine block and will adjust the timing of the ignition system in real time to avoid damage.  However, you will experience a decrease in performance and efficiency if your car goes into “limp-mode” or severe timing retardation to prevent damage from knock.

What is Octane Booster

Octane Booster refers to a fuel additive that increases the Octane Rating for a given fuel.  This is typically accomplished by using a active ingredients such as Alcohols, Ethers, Manganese (MMT), or Tetraethyl Lead (TEL) diluted in a solvent such as Toluene.

Alcohols such as Methanol and Ethanol have a higher octane rating than standard gasoline.  However, there are some downsides to using alcohols such as their affinity for water which can leave you with a water/alcohol mixture in your tank if there is any moisture.

Ethers such as MTBE, TAME, and ETBE are also higher octane and will increase the rating when mixed in.  The downside is that they are much more expensive than regular gasoline.

Manganese (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) can be a highly effective octane booster but it is also harmful to engine components such as injectors, spark plugs, catalytic converters, and 02 sensors.  It also negatively affects emissions.

Tetraethyl Lead is a common and effective octane booster but we all know that lead is extremely toxic in its pure form.  It will also damage engine components if improperly diluted.

Does Octane Booster Work

Yes, Octane Booster works.  There are definitely plenty of snake oil type products out there that advertise themselves as Octane Boosters.  Many of them have conditioners and fuel treatment solutions that can help provide some benefit to your engine to make it appear that you’re increasing the Octane, but the actual Octane rating of the fuel will not be raised and the knock will remain largely unaffected.

We recommend looking for the metal can as opposed to the plastic bottle.  It’s not a sure-fire indicator, but it’s a great first step since the harsh solvents in the high octane fuel can eat through plastic bottles.  Also take a look at the actual ratios of octane booster to the amount of increase in octane.

Do Fuel Additives Work

Short answer is yes, fuel additives work.  Long answer is that there are a lot of gimmick products out there that cleverly market certain capabilities without any evidence to back them up.  Our Buyer’s Guides for Fuel Additives are a great way to get an in-depth look at which additives are legit and which ones are just snake oil.

What does Octane Booster Do

Increases the Octane Rating of your tank of gas to help your car run more smoothly by reducing engine knocking and pinging.

Booster Fuels

Gasoline and diesel are the common Automotive fuels that can be octane boosted.  Theoretically any type of fuel with an octane rating could be boosted assuming you could find another fuel with a higher rating.
