Best Car Ramps 2019 – Buyer’s Guide & Reviews

Best Car Ramps 2019 – Introduction

Vehicle Ramps are the quickest and easiest way to get your ride up in the air so you can get work done underneath.  It does require a bit more finesse to maneuver the vehicle onto the ramps, you can’t beat the speed.  There are multiple different types of automotive ramp including solid steel, polystyrene, hard-resin, honeycomb, etc.  They also have different heights, widths, and safety features.  Choosing the right set of ramps for your application can be challenging, but this guide should help shed some light on the benefits of each option.

These also work great as a gift for DIY Mechanics.  We have a Guide for the Best Gifts for Gearheads if these don’t fit the bill.  Even if you’re looking to complete a simple job like swapping old janky car battery for one of the super nice ones on our Best Car Battery list, these ramps can provide some much needed leverage providing better angles to work.

*** Note: Before going any further, we have to mention that when performing any type of work underneath your vehicle, you must employ as many safety precautions as possible.  That includes multiple redundant forms of support in case the car was to slip off of the ramps or jack.  A good set of jack stands is imperative ***

Choosing the Best Automotive Ramps

Determining the weight of your vehicle should be your first step.  An exact weight is not necessary but having a good idea of how much weight the ramps will need to support is important.

*** Note: Automotive Ramps weight capacity is usually measured as gross weight across all of the ramps.  A 12,000lbs set will usually only be rated to support 3,000lbs per ramp.  Make sure you factor this in when deciding which ramps to purchase. ***

Once you’ve determined your necessary capacity, things like dimensions start to come in to play.  Making sure that the angle of lift isn’t too great for your car is vital.  Lowered or low-riding cars require a lower profile ramp with a lower angle of lift.  Material is another important factor affecting weight, portability, storability, and durability.  Steel ramps really only have oxidation to worry about while resin ramps have been known to crack if not used in ideal conditions.

Obviously, price and warranty are important as well.  Prices range from $40-200 for each of the ramps on our list.  Even the upper end of the price range isn’t too crazy when you consider the benefits of the higher-end design.  Warranty is a different story.  Ensuring that your ramps have a good warranty with a good company behind it is vital.  You never know what could happen and our goal is to buy once and use them forever.

5. Nicky Nice Solid Steel Auto Ramp Set

The Nicky Nice Auto Ramps are the only solid steel option on our list.  They feature a high-durability black powder coat finish with raised safety ribs on each side to help guide the tires up the ramp.  There are also punched and extruded holes on the inclined section to provide additional grip in all weather conditions.

These ramps provide 8″ of lift, but only 9″ of width between the walls.  They also don’t have quite as much capacity as many of the other options on our list with only 2000lbs of capacity each.  The ramps do stack though, meaning that they occupy less space in your garage when not in use.

Warranty90 days
Weight Capacity2,000lbs per ramp (6,500lbs total)
MaterialSolid Steel
Dimensions35″L x 13″W x 9.25″ H
Weight15lbs per ramp

With a decent number of reviews and over four stars, these aren’t the highest rated ramps on the list.  However, the solid steel design has been around for decades and some just prefer the old fashioned look and feel of solid steel.  Even with their solid steel design and increased weight, they still come in at under seventy bucks shipped.

While they’re not our pick for the best car ramps, we suggest taking a look at the link below for some additional information including pricing, photos, reviews, etc.

4. Discount Ramps 6009-V2 Plastic Car Service Ramps

The Discount Ramps feature a much lower-profile design than the other products on the list.  They are a good option for very low-riding cars with a loading angle of just 9.05 degrees.  The drawback here is that they only provide 2.75″ of lift.  This might be plenty for some vehicles, but many lowered or low-riding cars may find that they need more lift in order to get underneath the car.

The heavy duty honeycomb plastic acts similar to the Scepter design allowing water and dirt to fall through while still providing grip.  They don’t have quite the same capacity as the other options, with just 4,400lbs of capacity between the two.  These are really designed as a way to provide a little bit of lift in order to get a hydraulic jack underneath.

The only common complaint from reviewers is that the lack of an anti-slip bottom means that they lack the same level of traction provided by some of the other options.  This could lead to some sliding if the conditions aren’t perfect.

Warranty30 days
Weight Capacity2,200lbs per ramp (4,400lbs total)
Dimensions27″L x 7.8″W x 3″ H
Weight5lbs per ramp
Angle9.05 degrees

These ramps are definitely on the smaller end.  Probably not the best option for trucks and SUV’s.  However, if you have a lowered or low-riding car, these might be the only ramps that will work for you.  With almost 4.5 stars at under $50 shipped, they come well-regarded at a reasonable price.  Definitely take a look at the link below for some additional pictures, reviews, and information.

3. Scepter 08226 Plastic Automotive Ramps

The Scepter ramps are a good middle of the road option.  They employ a grid design that allows water, snow and dirt to fall through while still providing grip for all-weather use.  It also reduces the weight while still maintaining durability.  A core parabolic arch runs through the center of each ramp and helps to distribute the weight more effectively.

The ramps are actually quite strong rated at 12,000lbs for the pair (6,000lbs each) and only weigh in at 7.5lbs a piece.  They don’t provide quite as much lift as some of the other options but do provide additional width to accommodate wider tires.  Some of the reviews that we examined noted that the lack of an anti-slip bottom can be problematic with some reports of slippage occurring while trying to load the car.

Warranty1 year – limited
Weight Capacity6,000lbs per ramp (12,000lbs per pair)
Dimensions34.75″L x 11.5″W x 8.25″ H
Weight7.5lbs per ramp

This set carries decent reviews, over four stars from the majority of the reviewers and a reasonable price tag – under $70 for the pair shipped.  While they wouldn’t be our first choice, they seem to be a solid option if you need the weight capacity and the improved all-weather grip.

2. RhinoGear 11909ABMI RhinoRamps Vehicle Ramps

RhinoGear RhinoRamps are by far the most popular option likely due to their extremely reasonable price.  Manufactured with a high-strength resin, they are the only resin ramp that meets and exceeds the P.A.L.D. (Portable Automotive Lifting Device) standards.

These ramps employ Core-Trac non-skid technology to reduce sliding during use as well as an improved tread patter and wide design.  This wider design makes them some of the most secure ramps on the market.  The hollow resin design allows the ramps to be nestable, or easily stacked, making for more efficient storage.

Warranty90 days
Weight Capacity3,000lbs per ramp (12,000lbs total)
Dimensions37.6″L x 13.2″W x 11.4″ H
Weight9lbs per ramp
Angle17 degrees

These ramps are definitely the best car ramps you can find from a value perspective.  With a price under $50 shipped for the pair, it’s almost hard to justify spending triple that for the Race Ramps.  However, they are heavier, with less lift and a shorter warranty.  The hardened resin isn’t quite as durable as the Polystyrene of the Race Ramps but as long as you’re following proper operating procedures, they are more than good enough for most applications.

1. Race Ramps RR-40 Car Ramps

Race Ramps are easily our choice for the #1 best car ramps you can buy.  Take one look at them and you can tell that they are just a higher quality product than the other ramps we have reviewed.  They are handmade in USA with American-made materials.  Coming in at just 6lbs a piece, they can be easily maneuvered around the garage using the built in carrying strap.

Constructed with 100% solid high-density expanded polystyrene with a coating of hybrid polyurea makes these automotive ramps lightweight, yet extremely strong and durable.  They transfer no heat, and will not rust.  Their no-skid, no-scuff material protects your garage flooring from damage while also ensuring that they will not slide around while you’re trying to load the car.  This also makes them good car ramps for steep driveways.

Warranty1 Year
Weight Capacity1,500lbs per ramp (6,000lbs total)
Dimensions40″L x 10″W x 10.75″ H
Weight6lbs per ramp

Race Ramps are by far the best quality ramps you can buy.  However, the quality comes at a bit of a premium price.  At just under $150, they are actually a very good deal considering the fact that they will basically last forever.  The Polystyrene won’t break down like some of the other plastic ramps on the list.

These car ramps have hundreds of five star reviews without a single 1-star review.  This reputation along with their warranty and price makes these ramps the easy choice if you can afford to fork over a bit of extra money for the quality.  Check out the link below for some additional details and customer reviews:
